Crafting a Handmade Three-Leg Stool: A Journey into Woodworking

At Nature In Your Home, we believe in the power of hands-on learning and the joy of creating something unique. As part of our Hand Tools Woodworking Course, I had the pleasure of crafting a handmade three-leg stool, often referred to as a milking stool, as a sample project for our students. This project not only serves as a beginner-friendly introduction to fine woodworking but also showcases the beauty and functionality of handcrafted hardwood furniture.

The Inspiration Behind the Project: The three-leg stool, a staple in traditional woodworking, offers an excellent balance of simplicity and elegance. Its compact design and sturdy construction make it a perfect project for beginners. By creating this stool, I aimed to demonstrate essential woodworking techniques and inspire our students to embark on their own woodworking journeys.

Materials and Techniques: For this project, I chose to work with high-quality hardwoods that are kiln-dried and therefore durable. The top and legs of the stool are crafted from Maple, known for its strength and beautiful grain. To accentuate the joints used to construct the stool, I used walnut for the tenon wedges, adding a striking contrast and highlighting the craftsmanship involved.

Construction Details:

  • Top and Legs: The stool's top and legs are made from solid Maple, offering both durability and a clean, natural look.

  • Tenon Accents: Walnut wedges are used to secure each leg to the seat, providing a beautiful contrast and ensuring a strong, lasting bond.

  • Finish: The stool is finished with a natural clear quick-drying Shellac, which not only enhances the natural beauty of the wood but also provides a tried and tested protective, and durable coating.

Creating the Stool: The process of crafting the stool involved several key woodworking hand tools that are fundamental to any woodworking project:

  • Measuring and Cutting: The tools we used included a marking knife, combination square, compass, hand plain, spoke shave and Japanese saws to make precise measurements and cuts.

  • Shaping: The legs and top were carefully shaped to achieve a smooth, aesthetically pleasing form.

  • Joinery: The through mortis was made using a brace and drill bit, the tenon on each leg was shaped with chisels and a spoke shave meticulously crafted to fit snuggly together, demonstrating the importance of strong, accurate joinery in woodworking.

  • Finishing: The final step involved applying the clear Shellac finish, which brings out the rich tones of the wood and provides a durable surface.

The First Teaching Session: During the first session of our Hand Tools Woodworking Course, I introduced the three-leg stool as our beginner project. The students were excited to see the finished product and eager to start their own creations. We discussed the materials, tools, techniques, and steps involved in making the stool, setting the stage for their hands-on learning experience.

Why Start with a Three-Leg Stool? The three-leg stool is an ideal beginner project for several reasons:

  • Simplicity: Its straightforward design makes it accessible to those new to woodworking.

  • Fundamental Skills: The project incorporates essential woodworking skills, including measuring, cutting, shaping, and joinery.

  • Quick Results: Students can complete the project relatively quickly, providing a sense of accomplishment and motivation to continue learning.
